Finale 2014 - 4 Part Harmony Voice Range Settings

Recommended Posts

Hello, my friends

I wonder if it's possible to define user settings for voice ranges. I'm asking this because, in 4 part harmony staff, if I put a bass in a lower C (in the bass staff), the note head gets yellow. Obviously, this is not correct.

Thank you

Hello, my friends

Sorry but there's a mistake from my side...when I said " if I put a bass in a lower C (in the bass staff), the note head gets yellow." I wanted to say "if I put a bass in a lower F (in the bass staff), the note head gets yellow." and the F it's the second F bellow middle C.

Ask on the finale forum, they seem to be knowledgeable.

I could wait forever...41 views and no answers. Thanks for the sugestion.

Hmmm… that is on the low end of a bass part…  I'd call it reasonable for it to turn yellow there.  (I use Musescore, which turns yellow on an E).  It's not that the program won't let you put the note in, it's just warning you that you're getting low, so you won't have great projection for most singers in that range.  It's not the loud, meaty part of the bass range.

And remember that unlike instrumentalists, singers don't just sound bad if you put too many notes at the edge of range.  You can also wreck their voices for the rest of the concert.  Or the day after.  Or (gulp!) permanently.  Don't break your singers.  Older singers will tell you politely if something is not in their range.  Young singers will try to be heroes and fry their voices.

But some low F's for the basses are fine.  The yellow is a warning that you are approaching the floor.  Not an interdiction.  Heck, I'm a girl and I have the D below middle C.  (Which is why they pay me the big bucks.)  (:
