Call For The Creation Of A New Category For Pieces Submitted As "exercises".

Recommended Posts

I think in such a category, one would, let's say, post a first attempt at a form new to them. Thus, one who has never composed a fugue or a sonata and knows that they have room for much improvement, but has still composed a first attempt at it for which one would like to receive some feedback can post it there. In this way, this new category labeled "exercise pieces" or "draft pieces" will prevent the beginner from being judged for his/her first attempts at a form new to them as though they were submitted as final products (as they would be, or be perceived as, in the other categories), and thereby allow them the possibility of improving. It will also encourage one who has so far stuck to their limited style to dare to experiment and get out of their comfort zone but in the "safe" area of the "exercise" category.

This is a great suggestion. We do have the 'incomplete' section, but you're right in thinking that we could do with a specific section like this.
I think that this should be part of a larger change-up of the categories as a whole. Perhaps there could be a vote / poll on the top 20 or so?
And THAT should be part of a larger change-up of the site as a whole, but then its not as if we haven't mentioned the problems before..

I like it!  Fear of judgement is what stops most of us from putting ourselves out there, and therefore from reaching our full potential.

...Though wise men at their end know dark is right,
Because their words had forked no lightening they
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright
Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,
And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,
Do not go gentle into that good night...

Might work, but would all kind of exercises be in the same category ? Piano, Chamber, Orchestral, Band even rock bands ?

also who would decide which one is an "exercise" and which one not ? the same guy who wrote it ? don't trust very much on the self-critic of the composer, because many would say thier work is already good, and they'll post it in the "non-exercise" category, and maaaybe probably possibly one very rare composer will post something very good but due to his humility will consider it an "exercise"..

Keep talking about this and if this is indeed a necessary category I'll tell chopin.

Perhaps we should set parameters for what an exercise is. It would help if there were descriptions to go with each category for the sake of clarifying just what does and doesn't belong there. I kind of agree with SYS65 because I've seen so many works uploaded in the wrong categories and I don't doubt that they would do the same in this case. But if you're concerned about people misplacing works, I think we should make the aforementioned changes to the category system. If for some reason no one wants to do that, then just make the category and let things turn out how they turn out. The people who make poor decisions when they choose categories probably will continue to do so, but I haven't seen anyone do much about it before so why worry about it now? This new category is for those of us who will make use of it properly and I don't think there is any reason not to have it.
