Composing Short Pieces Using A Theme By Danjtitchener

Hello everyone,

This is the 2nd challenge in this series. The first was on the theme of my Soliloquy for Clarinet No. 5. You can still participate in it here: http://www.youngcomposers.com/forum/t33378/composing-short-pieces-using-a-theme-by-luderart/

The chosen theme this time is from the 5th piano miniature by DanJTitchener:

You might take the first 4 or 8 bars. I hope everyone can make good use of this theme and both the author of the theme and the participants can benefit from the challenge.

Here's my own entry to the challenge:

Although it's really short, I think I pretty much succeeded to make the theme my own (which I believe to be the real challenge in these challenges).

I hadn't been composing too much lately, so the challenge acted as a good stimulus.

Lyrics? Vocal quartet? You sure are making a challenge of this challenge!

I'm not sure what to do myself. I think maybe I'll not write for piano this time, but beyond that I haven't figured out what I'll write. Maybe something for harp since I was trying to get the hang of writing for it. Yeah that's what I'll do. Now I just need to figure out what form, style, and such...

who knew writing in lyrics could be so fun! well... probably has something to do with the fact that i'm just using my own made-up language. it's still fun though, you guys should all try it.

new challenge: make up a song with your own language.

EDIT: mine is probably gonna be up before the end of next week. and i'll leave it at this, it's going to be a very "unique" vocal quartet.

plot twist. recording went hilariously bad due to microphone issues. so i'm just going to post the non-live version in hopes that you're ear drums remain intact. http://www.youngcomposers.com/music/listen/6981/Fugue%20in%20G%20minor%20for%20two%20Oboes next week we'll try to re-record in hopes of a better ending.

I agree it would be good to continue these challenges. But perhaps it would be better to start the next one in the new year. And my idea for a new theme would be, instead of choosing one from an existing piece by one of us, to compose new themes specifically for these challenges. I think that that way, we would have more suitable themes. Moreover, the composer of the theme would themselves be able to participate in the challenge and not be left out of it, as is currently the case.

Good idea, Luderart.

What about a 16 Day, 16 Bar challenge in which entrants try to write the best short theme possible? :P

Jan 1 - 16?

Just the theme?  Exactly 16 bars?  No harmonization of the theme?  Elaborate a bit as to what you have in mind, I'm trying to picture how to write something satisfying that's that short.  Or would you just write as normal, introduce your theme, and have to stop dead after 16 bars, the winner being the person everyone most wanted to keep going.  (:
