Symphonic Waltz in B-flat minor

Recommended Posts

This is the last work I finished before my computer sadly crashed (though hopefully I will have it back up an running soon).  It is a simple melancholic waltz which uncharacteristic of me, I wrote very quickly (less than a week) and much of it away from the computer.  I'm fan of the Eastern European Romantic composers and Dvorak in particular and this was in part influenced by his Slavonic Dances.  I hope to add at least two other waltzes to compete a set of at least three.

Wow. This is a fantastic work. The sudden change from major to minor is outright brilliant.

Do you have slavic roots? I wouldn't be surprised if you do.

Thanks so much!  I'm far from Slavic but Dvorak is one of my favorite composers.  I love his Slavonic dances and symphonies.

I find your melodic consistency to be flowing and quite hypnotic.  Your repetition of the melodic contour with different harmonies underneath or in the relative major/minor modes brings much emotional lucidity to your melodies.  The contrasting section is kind of reminiscent of a trio in a scherzo or minuet and trio type of form and it also has more of a classical rather than romantic type of feel to it.  Really great and mesmerizing piece - thanks much for sharing!

P.S.:  In the contrasting section I love the canonic imitation between the winds and the strings which kind of serve to remind the listener of the waltz section.  Very clever.  I just can't get enough of this piece and upon further listening keep noticing things about it that I like.  Like the phrase extensions you employ basically throughout the waltz parts.  Great job!
