Violin Concerto - I

Recommended Posts

I finally got this piece copyrighted, so I can put it up now... this is a pretty early piece, and one of the first I felt relatively proud of for doing. This is just the first movement... hope you all enjoy.

this is great!

Nothing to say, only I like it. It has a sense of "egyptian march" in the beginning. The second section is great (when the strings play pizzicato).

There's only one thing I would say: in the tutti (which are godd), the violin soloist is lost (except in the coda perhaps). I see (in the score) it has beautiful figures, but I can't almost hear it.

Congrats!

This is pretty good for an "earlier" composition. You have nice themes, but I feel the whole piece isn't coherent and lacks a form. Like the orchestral intro and the entrance of the soloist was so different in style, mood....key signatures....it felt a little jarring. The violin writing is good, some double stops might be a little awkward, but I believe all of them are playable. You modulate a lot, and some of the key signatures are not friendly to the string family (as I'm sure you know).

Maybe you'll post the other movements up soon?

Hm... I'm sorry you feel that way. I know it won't change your opinion but I personally like the jarring changes, because when it all comes back it makes sense in the recapitulation. Now I don't always use it, but it has a niche usefulness I just love. Kind of like "The Young Person's Guide".

My teacher (referring to the unfriendly keys) has always told me that players should, "deal with it". I try not to too much but when the opportunity to use of borrowed chord shows its face, I can't say no.
