Miniature Jazz Composition #1

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone. It's been a while since I last uploaded a composition here (a collection of miniature pieces for flute & piano), but I've had some time and started a new collection of jazz miniatures. This new project is my attempt at trying something new and writing something that isn't clearly influenced by romantic era music. I don't write much jazz, so please let me know what you think of this first piece. Thanks!

Interesting. It certainly sounds like a player piano type piece, good job in executing that. Would I call it jazz, per say? I think it can pass as it, but it may be a bit oversaturated by dominant 7th chords. The only note I had a problem with was the B natural at the end of m. 3, but other than that, pretty nice rendition.

Thank you both for the responses. I'm glad that it sounds at least close to a rag piece.

Monarcheon- It's interesting that you point out the B natural in m. 3. When writing this piece, I actually thought to myself (and still do a bit) that m. 3 sounded a bit off. Glad to know that I'm not the only one. I'll take your comment about dominant 7th chords into consideration for my next piece; I certainly don't want all my pieces to sound like early 20th century rag pieces!

I love the sound of this piece so much!!!

Stride in the left hand? Check

Nice use of block chords/octaves as a textural variation? Check

Amazing motives (especially the very original and catchy motive starting in bar 14)? Check

This is also very reminiscent of Fats Waller, Scott Joplin, etc. which are very good names to be compared to.

With regards to it being classified as ragtime or jazz in my opinion there is a decent overlap between the two just as there is a decent overlap between musical theater and opera, etc.
