Quartet for Piano and Winds in Eb, Op.27

Hi all,

I have (finally) completed my Quartet for Piano and Winds. I have completed the first and second movement in August, but I was not able to compose a third movement, until last week.

When I listened to Mozart's Quintet for Piano and Winds, K.452. I decided to compose a Quartet, which could be played by my friends and me. This is the reason why it is written for Bb Clarinet, Alto Saxophone, F Horn and Piano.

I have tried to compose the third movement in the same style as the other two movements.

Feedback and sharing your opinions would make me very happy!

Enjoy!

Kind regards,

Maarten Bauer

Nice job. I like the upbeat feeling you've given it, along with the running sixteenth notes under the melody. I feel like the piano part could be a little more complicate, since it feels more like accompaniment for a trio than a part of it. Overall this is a great piece. I think I would gladly pay for tickets to hear this in a concert. ;)

Okay, I know I've already posted, but I just got to the second movement, and it's beautiful! I do feel like the end of the second movement is a bit sudden. The third movement is well done, relating to the theme but not too similar. I feel like for such a triumphant beginning, the ending seems to be lacking emotion and excitement. I'm amazed by this piece and by how much thought and emotion you must have put into it. Well done!

Thank you for your reaction. Because there have not been any reactions before, I thought this composition was too ''low-leveled'', but your feedback really makes my day. :)
I am glad you enjoyed it.

  • You are right about the piano, there are two reasons for the more accompaniment role:
  1. The piano part had to be relatively simple, otherwise my friend could not play it. It is obvious that I would write something more ''interesting'' and complicated, when writing for a professional pianist.
  2. I am not a pianist, so sometimes I find it hard to know wether a passage is playable or not.
  • Originally, the second movement was meant to be a theme and a set of variations. However, the movement now consist of the theme and only two variations. Maybe I should revise the end, as you say.
  • Indeed, the ending of the third movement lacks emotion and excitement. I will try to improve it.

Again, thank you for your constructive feedback and stay tuned for more!

A very light yet enjoyable piece, well done! Your inspiration comes across clearly. It's all balanced quite well, with a wonderful flow overall (had me bobbing my head a little bit haha), and I particularly enjoyed your use of triplets and chromaticism in the first movement. The second movement has a lovely sense of a lullaby to it. This may be just due to your software, but I feel the initial melody at the begging of the third movement doesn't really cut through. It also end quite abruptly, far before I feel you had explored all the possibilities with your theme (much unlike the first movement where I think you use it to it's fullest potential).

Excellent work, I do hope that when you play it with your friends you'll share a recording with us!

Thank you for the encouraging feedback!

About the third movement:
I think you are right about the melody, I will change it when this issue also occurs in real performance.
To be honest, I just wanted to have it finished, which is, of course, no valid reason. When I have recovered my motivation to this movement, I will certainly develop the theme(s) more, so that the ending really feels like an end.

Kind regards,

Maarten
