Gender on profile

Recommended Posts

When editing my profile it seems to me that it is required to pick male or female. Why gender is a required field is baffling, it has absolutely no bearing on music. And as a nonbinary genderqueer person it is pretty frustrating to have to misgender myself. Most social media websites have become more aware of this and subsequently accommodating.

I'm pretty sure "they" is the pronoun we use for that, rather than "it".

Thank you very much. They is the appropriate pronoun. "It" is never an acceptable pronoun unless explicitly stated as such by an individual, and most transfolk, including enbies, will be seriously offended by this.

Not at all. You cannot substitute a plural designation for a personal pronoun. The "entity" wants it pinned down or eliminated entirely. Either position is entirely a political grievance.

What?

Singular they is common usage. It has precedent and is widely accepted.

Just in general. I can see where this would be a cause of concern, though I feel it's unfair to compare this site to others :ermm:

I was just trying to get you to clarify your wishy washy statement. Just in general doesn't really help either.

Singular they is the use in English of the pronoun they or its inflected or derivative forms, them, their, theirs, and themselves (or themself), as a gender-neutral singular pronoun.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Singular_they

A few months ago, the Washington Post style guide accepted it. And it's been welcomed by people who identify as genderqueer and who feel that "he" and "she" don't necessarily exhaust all the gender possibilities. Universities allow students to select it as their personal pronoun. And so does Facebook, so that your friends will get notices like "Wish them a happy birthday."

http://www.npr.org/2016/01/13/462906419/everyone-uses-singular-they-whether-they-realize-it-or-not

These gender-neutral constructions, which not so long ago may have sounded odd or even unthinkable to traditionalists, are becoming accepted as standard English.

Singular they, which The Post officially adopted in its Style guide in 2015, is already a common habit in American speech. An example: "Everyone wants their cat to succeed."

Earlier, the so-called proper way to say it would have been, “Everyone wants his or her cat to succeed.”

But what gave this word new prominence was its usefulness as a way to refer to people who don't want to be called "he" or "she."

However please continue to invalidate. Using "it" as a pronoun is a transphobic epithet.
