Miniature Jazz Composition #2

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone. After some long months, I finally feel satisfied enough with this piece to share it. It is the second work in a collection of small jazz pieces written for piano. I tried going for a different "feel" with this one than I did with the first one. Feedback is always welcome! (As a bonus, I added a "vintage" sounding mp3 file just for fun. Enjoy!)

It's really quite nice!
Just a couple things I noticed.
In your second measure you have a C natural in your left hand against a C# in the right. They're so spread apart that it's mostly fine, but I find it a little bit too jarring for the second measure. XD
I found it a little repetitive that your melody fragments in the early part of the main section started with the same motive all the time. It's not bad by any means, I just thought it was kind of overdone... even expansions of the same melody would have been nice.
The 6 measure phrase from mm. 26-32 was off putting as well, but I can see how that it could be a nice of pace... maybe highlight the difference more if you're going to keep it that way.

Good job!

Great! Only two bits of back seat driving for you. The big rolling chord in bar 7 is perfect and it sets up a chance to make the next two chords a bit more open voiced and dramatic too, before you begin the melody. Second is that the fastest note here is the eighth note. Why not stretch out with a flourish or two of sixteenth notes at 24-25, or 30. i'm thinking kind of Fats Waller, since you're doing that style.
