Is this composition good enough as it is, and worth completion, or deserves more improvisation in the currently finished part? Also, suggestions on how should I continue would be appreciated.

The main reason for me posting this is because I kinda lost inspiration, or got lazy, so I wouldn't be really satisfied if in the end the whole thing was a bluff.

Hi Vadrif,

I love what you've got, but it needs to grow,  It's a great start though.  No one can really tell you how to proceed, but if it's a piece you yourself really like and feel it has some merit, then continue with it.

For me, I would like to hear some vocals or melodic line over what really is at the moment, just a bass track with backing, it's lacking the icing if you know what I mean.

Hello Vadrif,

Actually, it's nice, but too short in my opinion.
You already set the atmosphere of the piece and although I don't listen to this kind of music very often, I like it very much (so far).
When you extend this piece, make sure that there is enough variation in instrumentation, orchestration, dynamics, harmony etc. Otherwise the music could sound too monotonous.

One of the biggest nightmares a composer can have is a lack of inspiration. I have the same now in the last two weeks; I erase every note that I have just written down. Horrible!
If you become lazy, I would recommend not to continue composing in this piece for now. Look for inspiration instead of trying to compose something without inspiration. Simultaneously, you can work on other pieces for which you do have inspiration and motivation to finish them. When you have inspiration again for this piece, try to extend it!

Good luck!

Maarten

Indeed, inspiration is the biggest limiting factor, and I posted this for that exact reason. I am out of inspiration on how to continue it, therefore the short result. I will follow your advice and will only continue working when I feel motivated. Spending time away from one's own composition(s) makes one hear new in-depth details and mistakes. Thank you!

Another trick that I like to use to give you a bit of a different perspective on the your music is to transpose it up or down a semitone or more if you like (not as a permanent measure), but it's surprising how different it sounds:grin:

Piece starts out great..  You should definitely develop it more..   You've got a lot of low end,  sounds a bit muddy..  You build the piece up.. and then it stays there and then ends too quickly.  I suggest you might try fading the tom sound back down..   letting the fuzz guitar ring out for a bit.. and then you can start with something new/different coming it.. also go back to that opening riff you got going..

I actually discovered that not so long ago and it does give so much new branches and possibilities on where to go on with any track.

Well it's a temporary ending, I just wanted to include the guitar before ending the experimental demo, it can get a solo later or a different tone etc.. Inspiration comes and goes, but it will improve soon.

Quick update: Here's version 2(.2) of this piece. Still not finalized, this is not the official ending I'd like to have.

  • What's been changed?:
  1. Obviously, a new part added to it.
  2. Avoided monotony, even though some parts might sound so.. depends on your taste (as suggested by @Maarten Bauer)
  3. Lowered volume of Snare & Toms (as suggested by @markstyles)
  4. Overall volume fixes/improvements
  5. Edited a very tiny part in the drums notes

You may notice that the quality is a bit worse, I do that for demo versions to reduce the file size.. I've got a terrible internet speed, so... apologies for that.. :ermm:

Newer version, few edits from the version before, a new minute added + an actual ending. This might be the final version, it's satisfying for me.., even though I feel like I used a similar melody before.. but it's not the same exact one, so that shouldn't matter.. I guess.. I hope you guys like it, I personally loved that ending.

That a great improvement I like it, still think it needs some vocals, but this was worth the work, you've done a great job.

I wish I could add some vocals too. It would help so much, since then I can create verses/chorus/etc.. and have a justified method of repeating music without boring the listeners. Thank you for your feedback, it really helped!
