[Old Piece] Miniature for Clarinet and Piano

Another old(-ish) piece.

I had to write it for an interview at the Royal Academy of Music when I was applying for conservatoires at the beginning of the year. I was given the brief, a week or so before my R.A.M. interview, to compose a miniature of 60-90 seconds duration for two instruments of my choice using the collection of notes and intervals, D, F#, C, G, E.

VERY nice!

The piece reminds me of a dance. You use the entire range of the clarinet. Using the three different registers of the instrument helps to create different atmospheres.

The interaction between the clarinet and piano is fine, but for me there can be more exciting in the piano part. Now, it rather sounds like a clarinet with piano accompaniment than a 'fair' dialogue. However, it may be your intention to write a sort of clarinet sonata.

It can be very hard to write a decent piece, including a climax, in so few time. You have created a wonderful arch.

A love perfomance would make it even better (the digital sound is not even very bad).

Well done!

Thanks :D! I agree that piano could be more exciting, however, I had quite a short deadline and had to focus on the clarinet writing, as I wanted to make sure everything was playable/idiomatic.

Sure! Send me the parts and I'll work it up :)

No idea how long it will take, given as I practice in my free time - which as a teacher is precious little. I'll send you a recording when it's worked up and played!

I've messaged you the parts. Thanks for doing this, I really appreciate it! :D
