Waltz No. 1 (in D minor)

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, this is a waltz that I wrote in D minor. It's a short piece but I tried to keep it in the form.

Please let me know your opinions about it :)

I don’t know exactly what you are aiming for. Your waltz has very “industrial sound“, which may be perfect (or not), depending on what you want. I could envision it as a satirical waltz criticizing a technological society. It doesn’t sound very danceable, though. I have written something regarding waltzes in another thread.

Thank you for sharing your score. Some comments: It is very rare to start a piece that is supposed to be in d minor with a the sixth chord , even if it is in first inversion. If you would start with (d a) and (f a) it would sound more like d minor. But you would come closer to the oom-pah-pah of waltz by  writing (d) - (f a) - (f a) instead of (d b) - (f b) - (f b). In the second bar, the bass jumps into a very low register -- I would suggest using the second inversion of the dominant seventh chord, e.g. (a) - (ef) - (ef). This is a common bass figure for waltzes. The third bar would feature again (d) - (f a) - (f a), the bass in the fourth bar would just be (a) - (c e) - (c e). The first four bars would thus close with a half cadence.

Now, the melody is of course your choice and expresses your creativity. However, if you want to write something more akin to a typical waltz, I would suggest you use rests more sparingly and focus on a flowing melody. If in doubt, study some waltz scores at imslp.org, especially from Johann Strauss Jr. Even if you do not want to write a Viennese waltz, his waltz melodies will give you some ideas how to produce a more dance-like tune.
