Robbie McCammon
Mussorgsky, Shoshtakovic, etc Any particular keys or modes that certain music for the likes of Pictures at an exhibition has? Planning an A Level composition over summer and want to write something along the lines of 1900s Russian music Any tips let me know, thanks :) P.s. if you want to hear my second GCSE composition (un mixed version) to give feedback let me know because I might make changes to it
Luis Hernández
I think you should be more specific. From Mussorgsky to Shostakovich there is a long way...
HoYin Cheung
Does Rachmaninov count? His Piano Concerto 2 (1901) and 3 (1909) are quite Russian and spectacular too:) Also his Moment Musicaux (1896) and Vocalize (1915). Pictures at an exhibition was composed in 1874 though (since you are suggesting 1900s music).
Robbie McCammon
Well the orchestration by Ravel is more what im after ofc, and yes I understand they are quite separate but they're just examples I put up etc.
RaphaelWalsh
@HoYin Cheung Don't Forget his second Symphony! It has some very Russian melodies in it in my opinion.
Youngc
Harmonic scale. I f you could find any scales that were predominantly used in Russia that would be great!
