Mussorgsky, Shoshtakovic, etc

Any particular keys or modes that certain music for the likes of Pictures at an exhibition has?

Planning an A Level composition over summer and want to write something along the lines of 1900s Russian music

Any tips let me know, thanks :)

P.s. if you want to hear my second GCSE composition (un mixed version) to give feedback let me know because I might make changes to it

Does Rachmaninov count? His Piano Concerto 2 (1901) and 3 (1909) are quite Russian and spectacular too:) Also his Moment Musicaux (1896) and Vocalize (1915).

Pictures at an exhibition was composed in 1874 though (since you are suggesting 1900s music).

Harmonic scale. I f you could find any scales that were predominantly used in Russia that would be great!
