Concerto for Saxophone and Concert Band

Recommended Posts

A small concerto (concertino) in a movement. It has a classical style mixed with a "romantic orchestration"
It was composed back in 2015 for a 2016 premiere with the High school Concert Band from Escuela Libre de Musica

The composition has some novice errors hehe, also I'm conducing, so I apologize for the dancing.
I included the audio .midi and the premiere back in 2016 with the Escuela Libre de Musica Concert Band and Angel Cuyar as soloist.
As always, feedback is welcomed!

Oh, man, if there were no saxophones in the piece I would say it was composed in the classicism. I admire people who can write things like that, in those styles, I can't, my mind always escapes with a more dissonant world.

The introduction is powerful, the development is nice and the cadence, too. I wish the sound of the live performance was a bit better. But I appreciate the wonderful work young people do, particularly the solo sax (terrific in the cadence).

Felicidades, un gran trabajo y es emocinante ver gente joven dándole así de bien a la música.

Saludos.

@MeisterSegarra To me this sounds like one of the banderberg concerto by Bach but for concert band and solo saxophone.  The harmonic language is spit on with what Bach and his competmaries would have use: simple diatonic harmonic progressions with a strong I-V polarization, and a pinch of chromaticism for flavor. When it comes to thematic material and development, the period structure is well established and themes are clear and easy to hear. The form is not exactly what a modern concerto is, today, but it reflects what was written back then: the main group of instruments start and then the soloist plays after it. Very much like concerto Grassi form. The orchestrations, too, display late barque-early classical setting, expect for concert band.  In other words, you adapted a classical form for modern ensemble and it passed with flying colors. Bravo.
