"We're Going Home" — Space Fantasy Soundtrack

Recommended Posts

Mode mixture between major and minor is smooth in the beginning.
The wind chime on the second E major chord doesn't have the effect on me I think you want it to. It sounds very stratified.
The melody in the horn sounds a little comical with the semitone step down between E and C major.
The weird gliss. turn in the D major chord threw me off.
I feel like the fast section isn't substantiated quite enough. It seems to come in very quickly. Maybe introduce the rhythms a little bit earlier?
Modulation to A major was also very smooth.

Hey, thanks for the feedback.

Well, some things about this kind music is that it's supposed to be fairly cheesy in my opinion. Most of the classic sci-fi themes are. Also, that semitone is because in that chromatic mediant modulation, and where the melody is in that moment in time, the nearest chord tone is a half step away. Emaj to Cmaj has a difference of two half steps between the third and the fifth of Emaj, so that step down I'd argue is the defining feature of the sound. I could have done something else, but to me that voice-leading/flow just feels right.

Very nice. Reminds me of Star Trek in some parts, but it is unique. Is this live as it sounds pretty good?

Hey, thanks a lot! It is not live — it's all virtual instruments.

Yeah, that's fair. I wouldn't so much call it a modulation from E to C, since they're related in the Aeolion mode by the bVI chord, but treating it as a modulation would lead to it being a common tone modulation (Mi, in this case), rather than the stronger common chord modulation. It works and I see the effect of it falling into a new tonal realm, but it's good to question the melody, especially when it's the defining characteristic in this section.

Great job overall! I'm going to agree with Monarcheon, the pitch bend of the horn sounded a bit too forced.

But everything else is great. Keep it up.

Hey thanks!

I'm not seeing how the horn sounds 'forced' though, as it just moves down a half-step.
