Fantasy (piano piece)

Recommended Posts

Hey Guys,

This is just a piano piece, I'm really interested in your opinion. What do you think?

Ok, so, the good: I really think you captured something magical in the F# major section starting in ms. 9. (Although the key change was actually unnecessary, continuing in C# minor key signature would have been fine.) I think going for something minimalist, with a sense of wonder, really works in this section. The repeatedly bass notes are surprisingly effective!

Ok, the bad. The opening just isn’t cutting it. It sounds like a watered down 1st movement moonlight sonata. The switching between eighth notes and eighth note triplets feels awkward, too. The 6/8 section played with a forte dynamic marking is just plain unpleasant. But even if played pianissimo, the repeated notes here just don’t add anything to the piece.

Honestly, if I were you, I would keep the mss. from 9-24, slash the rest of the piece off, and see what you could do to develop the material you have there. Simple, heartfelt would be a fitting direction.

Thank you for sharing this with us 🙂

What a unique approach to figuration. I haven't heard anything like it before, and I find it refreshing. Then, I like how you really establish this approach you have, by transitioning, right around 43 seconds, to the B section, which "doubles down" on your interesting figuration. I also liked those deep, rich harmonies that happen right before you transition back to the A section.

I like the piece as a whole. Others have commented that it sounds like the Moonlight Sonata in the A section. I don't think it sounds like that at all. Yes it sounds nocturnal in a way but not like the Moonlight sonata. It sounds inspired and improvised, which is appropriate for such a piece as to be called Fantasy or Fantasia.

I really like it. I think the transition from the C# major section to the C# minor section was too abrupt, though. You could insert a few measures there where you add a cadence with a Picardy third to move from major to minor, or have a pause there with only the damper pedal still held. Those are some ideas I would use, but really anything works.
