Waltz-Fantasy in A major (revised)

Recommended Posts

After a long hiatus without writing much music or being active on this site due to both professional and personal reasons, I've trying to get back in the swing of things.  I've been revising older works and this piece in particular I've come back to off and on for awhile.  It is the second piece in a set of six solo piano pieces dedicated to my daughter (the keys loosely spell the first 6 letters of her name) and I've always considered the least polished as while there are individual parts of it I liked, it never sounded quite right to me.  This is the latest revision and I welcome any comments.

I love your waltz. It sounds pretty. But I wouldn't describe it as just being pretty. It has this effortless grace to the melody but at the same time doesn't sound complicated. If Mozart wrote a waltz, it would probably sound similar in style to your waltz. Chopin waltzes have an effortless grace but they are much more complicated than your waltz, not necessarily from the notes themselves but from the tempo.

I was thinking more along the lines of "light and delicious like a cucumber sandwich" for my description. But yes, this is a very graceful. It's energetic and relaxing at the same time. Excellent work, thanks for posting!

I pressed play, and after a couple of seconds, I was going to press stop and go look for something else, but then it turned into something really quite beautiful and accomplished.  I still don't really like the opening theme or the return to it, for me, it doesn't fit with the rest of the piece, neither in it's melody nor it's complexity, it seemed too cliché, but that's just my personal opinion, the rest is really beautiful as I said.  I dare say that the juxstaposition of the two parts was one of the main ideas behind this piece and completely intentional, but for me, it does sound like two separate pieces joined together, one of which I liked immensely, and other, not so much lol.  Sorry, I hope I don't offend you with this comment, it's just how it made me feel personally.

Kind regards

Mark

I actually quite agree with you, I've always felt that it didn't quite hang together as coherently as I hoped, though I like the individual sections individually which it why I've kept tinkering with it.  I appreciate the honest review.

I'm sure, as you obviously have considerable skill, that there is easily enough material in the second part of your waltz to make it a piece on it's own, and I would really like to hear that too.
