H, I like this piece. For me, the ostinato works quite well, first as a sort of intro or "prelude" in a mild bluesy style which leads to a more romantic part with the coming of 3/4 time signature. The second part develops properly to a climax in m. 43. The piece turns rhapsodic (or "fantasia") from this point on, but its good that the previous motives are used again.

The section starting at 1:12 is a bit unrelated to the beginning of the piece.  Especially on first hearing the two parts don't seem to mesh very well.  Then when you bring back the material from the beginning at the end it kind of rounds out the piece which is a good idea but the sudden tempo change is also a bit out of place imo.  The beginning material I would describe as kind of dreary and almost dull and sometimes chorale-like.  Then the part at 1:12 is more mournful and tormented.  Your approach throughout is very classical but your figurations are lacking in vitality.  Overall it was a unique piece which was quite enjoyable despite its weaknesses so thanks for sharing!

Thanks Luis, this is very useful feedback and encouraging. I think I will have to stick to this "fantasia" style for quite some time (for the lack of constraints, I admit :-)

Good to have some feedback on that, not so easy to work out when you're too involved...

Are you referring to the part up to 0'54 only or to the whole section up to 1'12?

Up to 0:54 it sounds like it's lacking in energy.

Yes - sometimes you have accompanimental figures that despite being faster lack drive.  Maybe that's just a tempo issue?  I just felt like much of your piece was lacking in energy and vitality.  That could be remedied with dynamic changes as well - it felt like the piece was all pretty much one dynamic throughout - it didn't get louder and it didn't get quieter.
