Scherzo for the String Orchestra (Additive/Divisive Rhythms)

Joshua Ng

Hi everyone! Recently, for a composition assignment, I had to compose a piece that featured additive and divisive rhythms with distinct motifs and this is what I cam up with! Please feel free to provide some feedback!

Nice job!  I like how you split the 10/8 bar into 6/8 and 2/4 but the cellos and basses are each in a different subdivision of the meter at any given time.  Scherzi are known to have more surprising changes in dynamics although you do a ffpp near the very end so there's that.  Thanks for sharing!

Thanks! I see, I will include more sudden dynamic shifts and take note of the subdivisions that you mentioned. This is actually a work that I was composing for an upcoming concert and I modified it to fit the additive rhythms assignment, with only the A section completed thus far! I will release the full Scherzo soon once I complete it!

I like it, kind of a riff on the scherzo from Beethoven's 9th symphony with a little Russian twist.

Yep I took some inspiration from that Scherzo and added a Russian-esque flair to it! I'm planning to include more chromatism elements in!
