Cello concerto n°1 in E minor - Allegro vivace (3rd and last movement)

Recommended Posts

Hi all 🙂

Here's the last movement of my first cello concerto :

I finished writing it during vacations in the french Alps mountains, hence the illustrative photo 😉

Glad if I could have somme feedback.

Have a nice day 🙂

Hello! Nice sounding piece you got here, and I enjoyed listening.

Did you mean to not write for cello in treble clef at all? I feel because this is a cello feature, utilizing the instrument’s whole range is important and you can do so so much more with the instrument than you did. It feels so tame in what it is playing at all times, and it can go wild with double stops and timbre!

I feel the same about the orchestra accompaniment, but less so. Because it is a concerto, I give the pass for the orchestra part being tamed out a bit, but it should be each instrument, the orchestra and the cello, bouncing off of each other in magical ways.

Overall, I notice the music just stops sometimes and then you start a new section. This is jarring for some of them, and a cool effect for others, but I think working on transitions could elevate the flow of your music.

Again, I enjoyed listening through! The midi was nice, there were cool chords, and I listened to the end. The rhythms, range, feeling, dynamics, etc. can all be so much more drastic, but that is what we are all working towards as composers.

Thanks for sharing,

Evan

Hi Evan 🙂

Thanks for your constructive review.

About the treble clef : well, I'm not a cello specialist, maybe listening to more pieces, or reading some scores through, could improve my compositional skills.

Anyway, I got the feeling that you enjoy, as you say it "drastic" moves. That's not what I'm aiming at currently ; I mean, that's not what I have in my mind/heart while composing those days, though some people address me the same critic as yours. Virtuosity is not my priority, even if I may lack some of it 😉

I take the point about working on transitions : could be a way of improvement.

Glad you enjoyed this movement overall !

Best regards,

Marc
