Intermezzo

Here's a current project of mine.  This work was orchestrated from a 10 bar melody line from a previous work for Oboe and Piano.

All suggestions are most welcome.  I found writing a convincing ending was the most difficulty part of the process.  I still have to discuss the work with my mentor.

Hi, I did some work on the ending ... I think it's more convincing now.  There are some other tweaks too.  I am still reviewing the work measure by measure.

For those interested  😊  and following this thread - Here's the newer version.

I think the ending sounds more final in this newer version.  I feel like you are either unconsciously (or consciously?) channeling minimalism in this piece.  There might not be any slowly morphing ostinati in this piece but the style is a kind of perpetuum mobile reminiscent of minimalism and it has the same difficulty coming to a convincing conclusion because it just wants to keep going and going.  It's enjoyable and playful to hear though - thanks for sharing!

I agree that the new ending gives it more of a sense of finality. But I’m not hearing minimalism in it.

I hear more Aaron Copland, then Phillip Glass.

It has a nice early 20th century, Americana feel to it. I could see Martha Graham doing choreography for it.

It’s a piece I would enjoy listening to more then once.

This has great textures, really engaging, sunny, and pleasant. That said, I think I know why the ending feels unsatisfying. It's because the overall structure isn't complete. Listening to the piece feels like, "I had a nice walk up a hill, and here's me at the top." -- which is just a selfie. But, "I had a nice walk up a hill, where I found something  wonderful, and came down again a little richer for the experience." -- that's a STORY.

Think up and back, not just up and done.
