Bach's Birthday Fugue in D-sharp minor.

Recommended Posts

Last Thursday was a special date for the history of Western music. 337 years ago, on the 31st of March, a child was born in Eisenach, a town located in Thuringia, modern-day Germany. His name was Johann Sebastian Bach, and he would become one of the greatest composers ever to live, even though most of his fame would be posthumous. Regardless, it has been of the utmost pleasure for me to dedicate one of my humble fugues to the birthday of Master Bach, in order to commemorate his art and work of such unfathomable abundance and heavenly quality as his spirit deserves.

Interesting pedal point from M. 62 on. The rhythm in M. 2 seems to work when it is supplemented by a steady stream of sixteenth notes because otherwise it strongly suggests the preparation of a cadence, at least to my ears . In M. 14 and M. 46, I (aurally) stumble over it, but in M. 73 it serves as a perfect way to end the fugue, I think. This nitpicking aside, I could not spot any glaring errors. Really solid counterpoint and nice theme, as far as my (definitely rusty) fugue skills allow me to judge. A pleasant and skillful work for sure.

Here's a transposed version of this piece performed by the new MuseScore 4 MuseSounds harpsichord soundbank. I would be most grateful to those listeners willing to give some feedback on the timbre of this soundfont as compared to my previous recordings.

Enjoy!
