Favorite Time Signature?

Leon

Recommended Posts

Hehe... I'm just trying to post a few fun topics >.> Is there any specific time signature you like? For what reasons etc. etc.

For some reason I NEVER was able to write in 3/4 last year, but now I'm writing all my stuff in it, not realizing it. ^_^ So 3/4 is kinda one of my favorites now. I just like all the stuff you can make in it. Other time signatures... 4/4, 5/4, 7/4, 2/4, 7/8, etc. etc.

Please list why you like the certain time signature =P

You should list to us why you like 3/4! :P

My favorite is 7/8! A lot of pop songs can be made a whole lot more interesting if you drop a hanging 8th note at the end of bars! Think of the Beatles' 'Come Together' in 7/8, just drop the extra 8th at the end of every bar! ;) It so lilting and irregular, like the downbeat is really impatient and just steps all over the previous bar! Plus, it's fun to write in, and to play.

I guess I didn't really list why Nick ^_^ I meant to say I like the patterns and rythyms (I can NEVER spell that word) of it alot. Yeah... Stuff like that. It gets annoying though when I'm writing in it and I think of a new part to put in that's in 4/4 >.>

7/8... I played a Bartok dance in 7/8... ROCKED! I like that time signature too. It always just felt like it left somethin' hanging, which I loved.

I like 6/8 and 2/2 I.e. cut time the most probably.

Also 3/4 and 4/4 are great of course.

7/8 can ocassionally be ok, but usually it's just annoying, and doesn't serve much purpose except being 'quirky'.

I'm ready to soak up the abuse for that :(

I actually can't stand 5/8. I don't know why, but I just hate it.

5/4's cool though, and the same with 7/8 and 7/4. I really like when composers combine many time signatures in a piece (Equus by Eric Whiticare), certain combinations can get a really good feel. Right now I'm working on one that uses 5/4 and 6/4 combos.

_Oh, I also hate 2/2, 3/2, and anything else/2.

Most of Carmina Burana, by Carl Orff, is in /2 meters. It makes it slightly hard to read, especially when he goes to /1 meters!! Rediculous.

I like songs in 7/8. I saw a song that was 66/8 but it was just a joke. I wrote a song that was 48/32. I threw it away though.

Good. If you didn't I'd have to shoot you and anyone who played it.:ninja:

_I always thought 3/4 and 6/8 were pretty interchangeable. Even though they're normally beamed differently, you could always accent beat 1 and the & of 2, and then beam the 8th notes in two groups instead of three...

If I write in 4/4 my phrases usually aren't of equal length anyway, so it doesn't feel like 4/4.

I second here. 4/4 is easier to use with complex rythmes unless you really need a very defined subgrouping of simple beats such as (3/8, 5/8, 7/8, etc... or the like).
