"The Tortoise and the Hare" - A Study in Contrasts - Young Composers Instrumental Music Composition Competition

Recommended Posts

Starting August 22nd, 2022 and running until October 16th, 2022, Young Composers Forum invites you to participate in a new and unique music composition competition hosted by @Thatguy v2.0, @PeterthePapercomPoser, @Tónskáld, and @chopinall of whom will also judge the competition.  “The Tortoise and the Hare” is the theme of this competition.  It is mandatory that the entrants associate a pair of instruments with the tortoise and the hare respectively which are meant to contrast each other.  However, the total number of instruments used in the music is left up to the composer's discretion.  A score/sheet music submission is also required.  The maximum allowed duration of the music is 10 minutes and all compositions will be judged based on the following criteria:

Melodies/ Themes

Harmony/ Chords/ Textures

Form/ Development/ Structure

Originality/ Creativity

Score/ Presentation

Instrumentation/Orchestration

Execution of Given Challenge

Taste

The competition does not have to stay true to the famous short story from Aesop’s Fables “The Tortoise and the Hare”.  Instead, the composer is free to use any poem, short story or painting as the inspiration for the music, as long as it is related to the theme (“The Tortoise and the Hare”).  Using a poem, short story or painting is of course, optional.  The composer’s ability to create the contrast in question between one instrument representing the Tortoise, and another instrument representing the Hare will be judged with the “Instrumentation/Orchestration” criterion as well as the “Execution of Given Challenge” criterion.  Compositions which do not feature two instruments as a duet or in high relief accompanied by other instruments that are clearly in the background will effectively be disqualified as their scores in these criteria will bring down their total score.

Also, there will be a cash prize of $100 given to the winner of this competition!  Given enough participants (at least 10), there will also be a cash prize for 2nd and 3rd place ($60 and $40 respectively).

In order to compete:

  • Must feature two solo instruments

    • One for the tortoise

    • One for the hare

  • With any accompaniment desired (or none)

  • At most 10 minutes of music

  • Optional poem, story or painting as additional inspiration

  • No age limit

  • One submission per participant

  • Mp3 rendition required

  • Score/Sheet music submission also required (please send an anonymous copy w/o the composers name)

  • $100 1st prize, $60 2nd prize, $40 3rd prize awards given at least 10 participants

  • Deadline: Sunday, October 16th, 2022

Submissions are to be sent to @PeterthePapercomPoser through direct message with the title of the composition as the subject line.  He will post the submissions anonymously in a special contest thread for everyone to listen to and consider.  Besides attaching a pdf score (without your name in it) and mp3 rendition of your music consider also including a description of your piece for the judges, fellow competitors and young composers at large to better understand your music.  Which instrument is the tortoise and which is the hare?
