Spring and Page (Unaccompanied Cello)

Last year, I was teaching band and choir in Grand Rapids, Michigan. This particular neighborhood was one of the rougher ones in the city, but also had a lively beauty to it, and I tried to capture that in Spring and Page. Inspiration from this piece comes from the Bach cello suites and the modern neo-soul chord progressions of Robert Glasper.

This sounds nice. I don't know Robert Glasper, but I'm always curious of music I don't know so I'll check it out.

This was pretty reverb heavy, is that what I'm hearing in the background? It sounds like sustained chords are giving harmony to the cello. Doesn't sound bad, just wondering.

That's cool you teach music, I'm sure you would have loads of advice to give here. You'll find your music will receive more attention for critique if you share a bit of your thoughts with others' work! Thanks for sharing

Sounds good. I would just take a look at the beaming. It sounds like youre going for a 2+2+2+3 in the 9/8 bars, so make sure your beaming reflects what you want the player to feel as the pulse. Other than that techincal issue, I would just be a little more intentional with your development. It kind of stays the same the entire time. If youre going for a Satie style furniture music, then youve nailed it, but if not, get out of your comfort zone with messing with your ideas.
