Patterns for 2 pianos

I made this mess a year ago. It was supposed to be for piano 4 hands but my brain took over in the wrong direction so to speak. It would probably need a lot of untagling to be perfomed. I still like the result.

It was inspired by me reading about Galant Schemas and by the etudes of Ligeti (though it is much more regular in metre than those).

It has three distinct sections:

  1. based on pseudo-classical patterns
  2. based on scales
  3. based on other patterns

Which schematas are used here? And I myself am not familiar with the works of Ligeti at all! Do you have any suggestions for his pieces?

The music itself is interesting with the harmony, but the engraving probably needs to be changed for a piano-four hand piece! Section like b.76-79 is quite difficult to discern for the prima part of the piano!

Thanks for sharing!

I think the Monte is the most recognisable and so its retrograde equivalent, there are more but usually so heavily modified they can't be recognised as the things in themselves anymore. I'll do like my awful math teachers and "leave the exercise for the listener". But really, what stroke me was the idea that direction and functionality are based on simple patterns and not some abstract root movement.

A lot of Ligeti's etudes can be quite challenging at first because of the high virtuosic energy, like Chopin doing jazz on drugs. My favourite is actually very accessible, the dreamy Cordes à vide. After listening to the etudes you can go to the full Piano Concerto.

Hi!

I believe @Luis Hernández was also studying the fascinating world of schematas, I'm pinging him cause he might be interested in your work, though Ligeti works seem more recognizable in the influences of your patterns to me despite of my overall lack of in-depth knowledge about these nice Galant patterns.

Regarding the score, well it's a mess we agree, and in all honesty I'm not even sure if 4p can be successfully obtained in a regular piano. It's very dissonant as a whole which was probably the intention, and it's loyal to its title or so I believe. Thus, as long as you are happy with it, 👌.

I didn't like it at all though and to be honest, but I'm sure some people with different tastes will enjoy the work.

Kind regards,
Daniel–Ømicrón.

I'm really glad you said this, because these are my thoughts exactly. Yes, it IS a mess, but I think you achieved a unique sound when writing this. It would be a good exercise for you to create a readable and playable score, while maybe amending some of the notes to achieve such a goal.

Overall though, a dissonant yet controlled sound, just focus on making this something applicable to humans! (I know AI is getting very advanced, but they'll never be able to take away what music actually is... human expression 😄

Still, very fun to listen to 🙂
