Lord Skye
I've got violins, double bass, trumpet, horn, trombone, bassoon, oboe, clarinet, flute, harpsichord, marimba and basic orchestral percussion. It doesn't seem like enough to be called an orchestra, plus there's the harpsichord in there. Is there a word for "almost orchestra" things like this? And sorry if this is in the wrong place, I picked the one that made the most sense.
Mark
What are they playing?
Hands
I would call that an orchestra, in the Baroque/early Classical sense.
Mark
yeah, kind of sounds like a baroque orchestra, but that would depend on the harpsichord being used for continuo, and there being a whole string section, and the wind instruments being used as soloists. Rafn
I'd call it a chamber orchestra.
nojtje
I second Rafn's suggestion
Lord Skye
Alright, thanks; chamber orchestra will do, I think.
nikolas
wait. How many violins and Contrabasses? If more than 1 CB, or 2 vlns, then it's not a chamber orchestra. Chamber orchestra is 1 of each (and violin 1 and 2). But it does appear that there is 1 CB, and probalby 2 vlns, so it is a chamber orchestra then! Lord Skye
Why does it matter how many basses and violins are in an orchestra, as long as it's more than one and not all too many?
