  1. Youth composition competition. Competitions due on February 14, 2025. Ages 10 through 18/19 (still in high school). Submit at MusicTeacherGifts.com Three age divisions for judging and prize purposes. Careful feedback is given to all entrants by two judges.
  2. This is the 11th year of the MusicTeacherGifts.com Annual Youth Composition Competition for ages 10 through 18 (or students not yet in college). The three age divisions judged are 1) under age 15, 2) ages 15 and 16 and 3) ages 17 and 18. This year we have a new prize added to our list for the senior winner. The 13th annual Musicworks Electronic Music Composition Contest Opens August 1, 2023 For immediate release: Toronto, Canada, August 1, 2023—The thirteenth annual Musicworks Electronic Music Composition Contest opens August 1, 2023. We invite you to share the with your readers, audiences, and communities. Our annual juried contest spotlights new musical talent from around the world, offering cash prizes and opportunities to be heard and published. In 2022, we received 179 submissions from across North America, as well as from Brazil, Greece, Ukraine, and many more places. First prize: C$500, a composer profile in Musicworks in 2024, and the composition released on the accompanying Musicworks CD. Second prize: C$200 and composer coverage on musicworks.ca in 2024. Third prize: C$100 and composer coverage on musicworks.ca in 2024. Marcelle Deschênes Prize in Electronic Music / prix Marcelle Deschênes pour la musique électronique: C$300 and a composer profile in 2024. This prize is open to entrants who self-identify as female or non-binary. Compose and submit an experimental piece in any electronic-music genre—acousmatic, electroacoustic, glitch, soundscape, intelligent dance music (IDM), turntable art, or video music. The contest is open to entries from anywhere in the world and from artists at any stage of their careers. Pieces must be previously unpublished (i.e. not released on a commercially available recording at the time of submission). Maximum length: 10 minutes. Accepted file types: MP3 or MP4 only. Contest entry fee: C$30. Unlimited additional entries are C$5 each. All entrants receive a one-year print subscription to Musicworks ($44–$59 value). Contest closes October 31, 2023.   4. Hello everyone! So long since I did this, I bet some of you were looking forward to it. This time we will be using a theme by a friend of mine and show him some support through his cancer. I will offer a 50$ 1st prize to the best composition that isn't by a close friend of mine and another 25$ 2nd prize. But to receive it you will have to prove you shared this video with at least 2-3 people (if possible composers) before the deadline (21/04/2023) (even if the piece is incredible this requirement can't be ignored, if so you won't be elegible to get the prize). I really want to get as many people as possible to participate in the project. This is similar to an art raffle on Twitter where you have to retweet a post. Once you share the video send me a screenshot of that to my email: ivanmusic1886@gmail.com Even if you didn't get any prize you can get an honourable mention if you show quality craft. There are two options: 1.- To compose a small set of piano variations using the main theme. 2.- To compose a free piece for any instrumentation using the material I show. (Both are equally good, but perhaphs the second one is more interesting.) Pieces will have to be longer than 1 minute and 10 minutes long at most. Shorter and more dense pieces around 2-5 minutes are encouraged. Musicality, emotion and imagination regarding the transformation of the material will be what will be valued the most. The style is free as long as it is understandable and enjoyable for most people (the experimental pieces will be included but will not receive any prizes).   9. Theme and Variations Piano Composition Contest Due Date: Nov. 15th, 2013 Winner will have their work recorded by me (I have a Steinway Grand at my disposal :thumbsup:). I'm might have a chance to premier it as well next summer, but I'll need to confirm this at a later date. Guidelines: 1. The piece needs to be in theme and variations form. 2. The theme is yours to choose but it must have NO repeated sections (Beethoven's c minor variations WoO 80 is a good example of what I'm looking for). I'd prefer a theme that is short and sweet (under 24 bars). It could be an original theme or a theme by another composer (as long as there is no copyright infringement of course). 3. The piece should be under 15 minutes. 4. The hardest pieces I've performed include Chopin's 4th Ballade and the Heroic Polonaise op 53, Scriabin's Etude op 8 #12, Beethoven Sonatas and Bach preludes and fugues. If you could keep the difficulty level at or under those pieces that would be appreciated ;) Other things to keep in mind : 5. I would prefer if the piece showcases a variety of styles. Breaks between variations are expected but I encourage you to try and bridge a few together (it's not mandatory). 6. You are welcome to compose in any style(s) you choose (Baroque, Romantic, Impressionist, the modes of limited transposition, 12 tone, ect...), it's up to you. 7. Submit the piece at any time before the due date and I'd be happy to give some advice on the piano writing. 8. And most importantly, Have Fun! Application Deadline: 2013-01-15 The New-Music Consortium, University of South Florida School of Music’s student-run contemporary music organization, is pleased to announce its first ever New-Music Consortium International Call for Scores. Two works will be selected, with one winner each in the categories of acoustic and electronic composition. Selected compositions will be presented at concerts during the NMC’s Spring New-Music Concert, taking place on April 6, 2013. Selected composers will not receive a cash award and will be expected to provide professional performance materials by March 1st. Although a stipend for travel and lodging will not be provided, the winning composers are encouraged (but not required) to attend the performances. If the composers choose to attend the concert, the NMC will assist with travel arrangements to and from the airport in Tampa and provide lodging discounts through USF where possible. Composers of all nationalities under the age of 35 are encouraged to apply. There is no entry fee, and works may have been previously performed (further stipulations below). Composers who have graduated from the University of South Florida after the year 2007 are not eligible to apply. A panel consisting of members of the New-Music Consortium will evaluate the pieces and choose the winning entries. USF Composition Professor Baljinder Sekhon will facilitate the competition. All applications must be completed and received by January 15, 2013. The winning entries will be announced by February 15, 2013. RULES AND GUIDELINES Individuals may submit one work to each category. ACOUSTIC: The submitted work should be between 5-15 minutes in duration. The number of performers must be between 3-9 players. The instrumentation may be a subset of the following instruments. Works that require a conductor are acceptable. (2) Flutes/Piccolos Oboe/English Horn (2) Clarinets (Bb, Eb, or Bass Clarinet) Bassoon/Contrabassoon (2) Saxes (Alto, Tenor, and Bari) Horn (2) Trumpets (2) Trombones Bass Trombone Tuba (2) Percussion Piano (2) Violins Viola Cello Double Bass ELECTRONIC: The submitted work should be between 5-15 minutes in duration. Submissions of electronic works may be composed for audio playback up to a 5.1 speaker array. Submissions may be composed for any combination of audio playback, live electronics, and up to 4 performers (instrumentation should be selected from the list under ACOUSTIC guidelines). If necessary, a score, graphic representation, or other sufficient performance instructions must be included in the submission. OTHER: ~Works of any style, aesthetic, and notation will be accepted. ~The work must not exceed fifteen minutes in duration. ~The work may also call for an “unusual” (e.g. folk, traditional, rare, Partch) instrument. In such a case, the composer must provide both the performer and the unusual instrument for all rehearsals and the performance of the piece. NMC cannot assume any expenses for this performer or instrument (e.g. travel, accommodation, per diem, insurance). ~Only one entry per composer for each category (acoustic/electronic) will be accepted. ~A jointly written work will be considered a single entry. ~Submissions may have been performed previously, but pieces that have been played and/or recorded by a professional ensemble should not be submitted. ~No information that indicates or suggests the name or affiliation of the composer can appear anywhere on the entry work score or mp3.
