  1. Judging by the date on the Piston, it's an early edition -- and thus doesn't really get into 20th c. It's still a good book in its own right though.
  2. I sadly lack the compositional skill to give you any advice, but I must say, I love what you have so far! You capture the grace of flying extremely well. I absolutely love the pizzicato section. I think you should maybe introduce a couple more themes in there while building up to a delicious fff climax which brings you back to the flying theme.
  3. Hello all, this is my first attempt at working with an orchestra, or anything else than a keyboard for that matter. It's also my first time composing anything longer than 30 seconds. A little about me: I've played the piano for about 5 years and sung for about 2. I got the idea to compose around this July, and I've been working through a few composition books since then. The majority of what I've composed so far is basic 4 part writing. I assembled this piece out of a few of those that I liked(which is probably why it sounds so disconnected). I tried to make the transitions sound alright, but I'm not really sure how to segue into a completely different melody in a smooth manner. I'd like to find out what's wrong with this piece[there some parts that I don't like, but I don't really know how to do anything better] and how to make whatever I do next sound better than this. I also don't think the title fits. I'm just realizing that now. Ha. Also, I've never studied any orchestration. I tried to stay with in the ranges of each instrument, but I don't know anything more subtle than that -- so feel free to point out anything that would be odd or unnatural in a real orchestra. Thanks! EDIT: I seem to have accidentally placed this in the wrong forum. Could someone move it for me? EDIT again: I added a rendering of the piece in GPO: pen.mp3 - File Shared from Box.net - Free Online File Storage midnight adventure.pdf midnight adventure.mid
