This is for a film, one of a few scores I am doing for competition films this month. Needless to say, the deadlines are pretty tight so this track had to be done quickly (took me a few hours). There's a few things I want to do with it still, but I'd like to hear your thoughts. This track is called "Into the darkness" and is cued when a woman is killed by mistake. This is a very dark, sci-fi film.

^_^ I'm in my final year of highschool too, are you doing ext. music as one of your subjects? I have to do two major compositions for it :/ It'd be cool if we were in the same boat XP

And continuing from my last comment... the tension really builds as it goes on with the bass drum having a huge impact. One thing is that it sounds a bit too triumphant toward the end considering it's after someone died and the murder is regretted. Reminds me of a strategy game piece. But I don't really know what's happening at the moment, I mean you said the music comes on when the woman is killed by mistake, is this during the realization of what the murdererhas done? or while he's running away? or simply with the dead body and the murderer gone.

I think it's a very dramatic piece which sounds great, but could it be made to sound more sci-fi and maybe be more shocking, as the progressions seem too slow for being after a murder.. unless, as I said before, it could be the representation of the murderer realising what he's done, but then the triumphant section doesn't fit.

If I seem like I don't know what I'm talking about it's because I've never had experience with film music :laugh: It's so great I bet you could still win with it, but if they're at your standard, then wow O_O! Pretty high standard competition.

Good Job Chris! Very dramatic with a touch of energy and motion with the marcato strings and percussion. Please keep posting those MP3's

Thanks for the comments. The competition is actually a filmmaking competition, but there will be prizes such as best sound design, best original score etc. This music isn't actually for the murder itself, it's straight after, and there's a sequence with the guys that killed her.

Tarik, I take music at high school. (Is ext. music extended music? We just have "music" streamed into different fields, composition being one of them). :laugh:

Good stuff - very very eerie feeling, and I can see how it would fit the scene (although seeing the scene would probably make it even more effective).

I am most especially glad to see that you didn't make the theme erupt into a forte passage, as I think many composers feel a need to do this to increase emotional impact, yet it is completely unnecessary.

Keep up the good work.

Thanks for noticing that, cavatina. The idea was to keep it rather dramatic, but on the subtle side, without overstating. Also I tried to add a hint of energy, without actually going all-out. Thanks!

I have nothing but respect for composers who do this... I think it's one of the greatest challenges for composers not to give into the temptation of abusing dynamics! Cheers to your acceptance of this challenge!!!
