"Neo-Medieval" Stuff ..... or Something

Featured Replies

some neo-medieval pieces... say, no modal coherence and such, more an atmosphere than strict rules. for some time medieval music was very important for my work and still now i love to use some idiomatic rhythmic patterns and shape of voicing from that era.

FIORI is a polyphonic canzona composed for my greatest love. God bless him forever!

OCKEGHEM is a dis-arrangement of the song Ma Bouche Rit Deux Fois, by that famous composer. i have recently posted it here but i changed some things. it was done taking the score, which is in 4/4, changed to 3/4, cut off all bars which didn't anymore make sense and linked the remaining bars.

CHANSON is a poliphonic song with 2 voices in canon and a third free.

HERANÇA (heritage) is a song based on motives of the chanson Jo Sum Tuo Servo, by Ugo de Lantins.

FOCO is for 2 voices and instruments and it was composed for an oratorio on the life of St. Francis i was working on 2 years ago and remained unfinished. this bit tells about the miracle performed by St, Francis when he was taking a meal with his fellows. the story tells us that he was preaching in a such gentle and seraphic way about God that all the monastery where they were seemed to be taken by a supernatural fire which didn't burn but appeared to show the glory of God. almost all sections of this oratorio were deleted because they were too much primitive, but some remained and this is one of them. it is somewhat harsh and primitive, but i like. the sopran has unreachable heights but i was not able to change it..... so listen it as an abstraction.

INDICAME - Indica Mihi Ubi Cubes In Meridie - is based on a Song of Salomon using some parts of a gregorian chant.

SHAMBALLA is one of my first compositions ever, done about 4 years ago. the name is of an ancient Sacred City sited in Asia.

CNZNTT - Canzonetta - is also from that Oratorio. it tells about the life of poverty choosen by St. Francis.

CYCLOPS is one of by boldest works, i think, it is a strict canon in 3 voices - some transitions free. the second voice comes in just after a crotchet pause, and the third after a pause of 3 crotchets from the start. i have already presented it here but this version has a new instrumentation.

OUSARÁ - Com'Ousará Parecer - a simple polyphonic song with canonic devices based on a poem by Dom Dinis, illustrious and learned king of Portugal.

well....... hope the midis can do a good work unto you. enjoy and tell me your impressions! thanks in advance!

 thank you for not even a single download!!!!

XD is there a bass guitar in the second one?

anyway..

I like them. All I know about medieval music is the notation and that they used modes =P The thid one sounds quite modal, but not so much medieval.

I like the mix of instruments used in the fourth. I think Foco is done quite well except the high voices are horrible XD If it was another sound it'd be a lot nicer, but they play nice melodies none the less.

So far Indicame is my favourite. Sounds more medieval at least than the others so far. Probably because of the Gregorian Chant.

Shambala scared the s**t out of me XD It has a loud first chord thing. Pretty good for one of your first. Usually firsts are more melodic rather than chordal.

CNZNTT conveys poverty well. The sad atmosphere is maintained well. Sounds like you're using the pentatonic scale in some bits. I think it's my new favourite :P

Cyclops gets quite interesting and seemed like it was getting boring but some how kept my interest :) ooh I like 1:40 onward. This is my new favourite XD! Daym this one's awesome.

Ousara... you sure like to choose odd instruments :) Ummm... comments about this one... Cyclops rocks! :)

It's pretty annoying when there's so many things in one post, people don't have half an hour to spend on one person :P But I felt sorry for you and wanted to hear some medieval music ^_^ Good jobs.

:) hi Tarik

MANY thanks for your lovely kindness in listening to all my pieces! i thinked i was here talking with the walls :P i know that my music is not much popular here, and i loved that some of them were pleasant to you!

yes i like to make experiments with different instrumentations, and although that's a very risky attempt - because the different soundboards for the midis can utterly destroy a piece - i think that computers sounds can be very appealing for their exoticism. i don't wonder that some pieces sound terrible in your machine, in this case please feel free to change the instruments at will till finding a good combination for your taste. specially try Cyclops with the three voices turned for piano, i think that an excellent choice too.
