Nest of the Black Pearl

This has been in the works for a while. I think it has potential but there's some stuff about it I don't like. It's supposed to be piratey and quite like film music. I did write the music to a picture my friend drew but I can't find it at the moment. Anyway I hope you enjoy it & I look forward to hearing your opinions and suggestions :innocent:

MIDI attached.

Moved to Orchestral. But I'm so impressed with this, I'm going to consult with the rest of the reviewers/mods as to whether it deserves a place in Major Works. May not quite be long enough, but it's worth a shot.

Anyway, excellent piece. One thing you should consider is more rhythmic variation. Much of it sort of goes on and on and on with not much changing aside from the actual notes. It's easy for the listener to mentally fall asleep listening to music like that. Your orchestration meanwhile is brilliant. Some of the combos you use are very fresh indeed. And the melodies are quite "piratey" if I do say so myself, with just the right folk/shanty influences.

As an aside, you say you're at UCL. Are you doing music there? If not, you must be very mult-talented.

Thanks mate :(

I'm actually studying for a law degree. UCL has no music department! :innocent: It's a shame for me because it makes it harder for me to do musical things although there are plenty of societies for jazz and classical musicians.

The UCL orchestra doesn't really play new things so I'm trying to find string players who might like to play some of my music but even that's been quite difficult so far. I'm probably just not looking hard enough; this is London after all!

Anyway I must be off. Thanks again for moving my thread and the comments you made (I'll get back to you on your points about rhythmic variation).

Awesome piece, very upbeat and interesting to listen to. I really like your work, this is the second piece I have listened to of yours, and both completely brilliant! Excellent, look forward to hearing more!

It is very good, however I pretty much knew exactly what to expect before I even opened it. It has all the elements of your standard pirate music. However, it is very well written, so cheers.

Oh man, this is insane! I love pirate music ever since i played the "Monkey Island" Series when i was little.

This really holds up with that pirate music, it's so fast pace, and always on it's toes...just extremely well written. Awesome.

very, very nice. very nice. indeed.

you should use better samples man. what you have for the mp3 sounds no different than midi.

That's because we have the same type of sound card. Some people will have different sound cards, in which case the mp3 will sound different to the midi.

i know what you're talking about. some Creative soundcards have built-in midi wavetables that are controlled by soundfonts. but most soundfonts are pretty crappy to me too.

MAY I JUST SAY THAT:

I HATE YOU I HATE YOU I HATE YOU.

Or rather,

I love you so much that I hate you.

I don't think that I'll ever be able to post here again.

WAY too intimidating.

BUT!

I LOVED IT!

BUT!

I didn't like the ending so much. It wasn't much of one, by my standards, unless, of course, in the film, it corresponds to something that happensss...

  • Author

Regarding the ending: no it doesn't really correspond to anything. And in fact I 100% agree with you. It's not really finished until I can improve that ending but I'm really, really stuck for ideas

Glad you enjoyed the rest of it though :(

I'm really, really stuck for ideas

Just get yourself into the same frame of mind you were in when you wrote it.

I don't want to sound like ungrateful for feedback in any shape or form, but I'd like to hear what the person who gave this thread 1 star thinks of the piece... if you dislike it that much you must have some suggestions which could be of some use to me?

I don't really like this rating system, as someone can just spam 1 star straight down the forum with no reason. It's anonymous and no thoughts are given for the rating. I doubt anyone has a good reason to label this song one star, or most songs here, and the rating was only given for amusement for the provider.

Well they're averages, so If it's rated low, that's because the average vote is low.

I understood that, but I was a bit disturbed to see all the threads in Orchestration to have 1 star. That sure encourages people to post songs!

I know; it was 1 star previously so at least one person must have given it one star. I was just wondering what they might have to say... I wouldn't rate something 1 (or 5 for that matter) star and not leave a comment.

I s'pose it could be a spammer. Ah well, I'm sort of taking it out of proportion now. Never mind!

The ending is really amazing I love it! My favourite part of the ending is from 5:32 to the end. In the whole song you create some sort of dramatic which unloads perfectly in the end. Well done dude!

Oh! I have a problem with this score. It's not musical, technically (although of course any more musical comments are very much appreciated!). Basically on Sibelius the text where it says 'picc' on the score (as in piccolo, the abbreviated version, not on the first page) has been displaced and is on the score of the page preceding it, and I can't seem to move it!

Any ideas how I can sort this out?

Hmm, I think its an interesting piece but it definately lacks development...or maybe contrast is a better word. You started with the intense theme, continued with an intense theme, finished with an intense theme. Although if it was for a continuous battle theme, it would work very well. As a song, I think it would be one of those good to listen to once or twice but gets bored after that.

Your use of dynamics was interesting at the opening. Very teasing to the ears. There are a few things I should note though. If this were to be actually played, alot of the flutes will be either unheard or just simply too screeching. Eg: Trumpets and flutes together: The flutes will have to be screeching or they will just simply disappear. This effect is usually used for marching band style. Clairnets and Flutes unison, I've tried myself but can't say it worked too great, octaves are alot better MOST of the time.

I liked your piece, wish I could hear an mp3 version of it.
