modulation

Featured Replies

Hi,

I'm new to this forum and I don't know whether this is the right place to ask this question? so if it isn't please exept my apologizes.

recently I've been working on a very short composition. 16 bars to be exact. and I've been advised to use only pivot chords to modulate. 8 bars in i have to modulate to the subdominant but I can stay in the subdonimant for only two bars and I only get ot use a limited ammount of chords( tonic, super tonic subdominant and dominant).

so I was wondering whether it's pratical to always use pivot chords in this kind of situations. or should I just use phrase modulation or chomatic modulation instead?

really appretiate any comments on this!

thank you.

It's whatever works in the piece.

I don't think there's an "always practical" situation for composition. And if there is, there shouldn't be.

I think after time we begin to feel when its

the right time to modulate in a work, and

therefore the modulation is easier in that

you can hear where you are going by the

accidental.

Although, sometimes I have to modulate by

reason alone. I am not expert in modulation.

I too would like to understand better.

Jeremy

I suggest you definitely practice using pivot chords, but after you get a good handle on the theory part of music, you should take everything with a grain of salt and go with what your inspiration and ear tell you.

It's always good to know the rules before you bend them.
