Rick Roll marching band style

Featured Replies

Rick Astley's "Never Gonna Give You Up" arranged for marching band. Haven't figured out what to do with the bridge (It might just be a drum and tuba break) and still need to end it somehow. I figured most drumlines would come up with their own beats, but this is the drum beat from the song anyways. What do you think?

Oh wow, I'd LOVE to hear this at a football game at some point. Hahahaha. Rick Rolled! :)

One point to clear up: in my experienced with drum lines and marching bands, they hardly ever come up with their own drum beats on the field. They make improvise small sections or enhance something but most of the time they played what was written. Could be just the band director(s) we had in high school, but you may need to write something out.

I'd also take a look at the drum pattern you have in there- which sounds like it was just the ripped drumset pattern from the song. Add some more fills and consider that you'll have a full drum line that usually consists of several bass drums (various sizes), several snares, several cymbals and then quads or quints players. Make it more interesting.

Also, a few of your harmonies sound really odd to me. Perhaps there is a mistake? Finally, the bridge needs alot of work. I would consider breaking into a complex drum pattern that can start off simple then progress and build tension. As you do this, you can bring more parts of the band back in and then really swell into the ending section.

I hope that helps and thanks for sharing!

I wrote this with our marching band and drumline in mind. They tend to come up with our own beats, and they'll probably be able to come up with something better in a shorter time than I can. But I see what you're saying. I did rip the drumset pattern from the song just so the drumline has an idea of how the song should sound...I guess after they make up the beat, I'll write that in this song. Hehe.

The harmoines where? Can you point out at what time in the song? I would post the pdf, but I'm using lilypond, and while trying to add instrument names to the score, it completely blew up, so I'm working on fixing that.

Thanks for the input!

I like it! A nice stand tune, I say just end with people singing it would be nice, and more funny so people can go "OH YEA! THAT'S THE RICK ROLL SONG! :D "
