First attempt Fuga

Featured Replies

Hi there,

yesterday my daughter was humming something vague, I instantly wrote it down. And later that day i tried to make a fugue out of it. 3 voices, in E minor.

I'm not trained to be a composer, so don't expect a masterpiece!

But some feedback and tips would be very nice indeed...

The audio file:

The score:

Thanks,

I like it! Though it doesn't necessary follow traditional counterpoint rules, I like fugues that basically tell Bach to shove it! You have some good development ideas, too. Keep it up!

Thanks c7music!

I'm not that familiar with the counterpoint rules, but i'll do some research.

Any books you can recommend?

Thanks again.

Very nice! It flows together very well and there are no rough spots at all. This piece gives me a feeling of quiet determination, though it is a thoughtful mood as well (as if someone is looking outside a window into a gloomy day as rain drops fall).

There's a website I can point you to that has some excellent information on it.

Alan Belkin's page on "The Principles of Counterpoint"

It's excellent. Not a composer ? Your daughter and you are geniuses. Keep it up!

Nice job -

Depending on what style of fugue you may not be breaking as many rules as you think. So for a 20th century fugue this is pretty good for the first time. Your counterpoint is Ok - you just would benefit from allowing P4ths, Tritones more often in the upper voices and introducing suspensions and their resolutions. But I love your harmonic thinking - you did some nice exploration of the chromatic descents
