Lale's Lullaby

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Here is a piece I wrote a few months back, tweaked recently, and recorded today just from Sibelius 6.

It's a simple lullaby attempting to be both accessible and interesting. It's also pretty easy, pianistically, so I hope all the pianists here feel free to have a bash at it!

Here's the YouTube link:

Here's the score:

Please leave me some comments, here as well as on YouTube. I really appreciate any feedback I get! :)

Thanks!

Danny

Lale's Lullaby

I love the harmonies of the trio section. it makes the return of the opening material much fresher.

A live performance would make this far more more beautiful.

Only criticism is the F major chord in root position. i really think it is too jarring. You harmony is somewhat unstable throughout - which I like - it seems to end with a major chord quite out of character. maybe adding a major 7th and 9th or 11th even and spreading out the voicing pp would make a better ending.

Hi Chris, thanks for the review & listen. :-)

You're right about the last chord.....I'm not quite comfortable with it....let me try some alternatives.

And yea, it would improve with a live performance ... but ... feel free! I'm sure I'll play it myself at some point, but I'd love all keyboard players to have a go at it. :)

Cheers!

It sounds vaguely lullaby-ish, like in some kind of limbo. I agree with CO, the middle part does make the main theme sound like some sort of relief, or "back to a peaceful sleep".

The only things that mark this as a bit too restless for a lullaby are the chords that appear to "block" the momentum sometimes (like at 01:06, for example), but maybe you intend them to be softer in a real performance.

I couldn't associate the music with the pictures, not that it matters much composition-wise. xD

I like it. :)

Yeah, it's not meant to be a real lullaby for soothing someone to sleep.... typical composers, eh!

And yea, the pictures were just nice pictures I found.... not really related. :P

Thanks for listening. :)

I'm not a fan of this one, because it's just not smooth and very flowing

  • Author

Fair enough, peq. Any idea why? Maybe it was the 5/4 that made it seem not very flowing?

Any suggestions for how I could maybe improve its flow?

Any other takers? :)

Any more thoughts from anyone?

Nice piece. I liked the 5/4. I looked at the score.

I tried to things on the last chord. Putting a B natural on top (instead of the A). Or doing ADF - f on top (so your doing a dm on top of the F) chord. Can't say either was better than your ending. A little more colorful?

hi daniel

i find that this piece are very natural and calming , because you use a lot of bitonal material on the transition , it will be very effective , and the section are very clear cut , it will be well controlling phasing

i like it a lot

Thanks roy and dark.

Roy: yes, perhaps the last chord needs to be different. I'll experiment.

Dark: Thanks for the comments, and I'm glad that you like it. :)

I like this piece, reminds me of some Zelda games :)

I agree with others, the last chord sounds a little bit strange. It gives the piece a clear ending, which I think doesn't fit to the over-all feeling of the piece.

The youtube video says an error has occured. Is this your doing, or my grandparents computer?

  • Author

Probably the computer. Give it 5 minutes and try it again, and that usually helps.

Thanks, Brainstar. :)

Hi, Daniel,

very enjoyable piece, loved the 5/4, the adventurous harmony, and the "flowing" contrasting middle section.

Also, very beautiful score! It made one WANT to read it. But why not indicate phrasing? M.14, what kind of diminuendo do you want?

Let's listen to a live version, shall we?

  • Author

Thanks, Emmanouel!

I should probably add a little more detail of phrasing to it ... I'll probably tweak it in a few months' time, and update it slightly.

As for a live version, I'll get around to playing it eventually, but I would really love if you, or any other YC member would have a go at playing it. You could upload it to YouTube or somewhere if you wanted.

Thanks for listening! :)

Any more takers?

hey daniel,

i tried to play it on piano, but I think I need far more practise :D

The more i get into this piece, the more I think it would be wonderful with an euphonium part in it. I think, the sound would fit very well :)

Am I allowed to give a try on arranging it a little bit?

Brainy

Hey Daniel.

Usually I can't stand a Lullaby; however this had more of an interesting harmony than other cliche chord patterns used nowadays.

I enjoyed it!

  • Author

@Brainstar: thanks, I appreciate that you tried to play it! I'm sure it'll come together with a few days' practise.

I'm not sure if the balance would be right with a euphonium part, but yes, you're certainly welcome to try! Just obviously give me credit for the original, if you decide to do it. :)

@Liszt: Great! Glad to hear that you enjoyed it. One of my goals with this piece was to write something traditional (a Lullaby) but keep it interesting somehow. I tried to keep it interesting by using 5/4 and some distinctive harmonies. Hope it worked!

Cheers. :)
