Breathing - a 2' orchestra piece/concert opener

Featured Replies

Your score is tiny. I'll comment when a score is posted (not meant to be rude though it sounds like it!)

Just to comment on the score, you need to clean it up. C scores are NOT helpful to the conductor. Make a transposed score and keep it. Reset the spaces between every staff and reset the entire note spacing and make it so you can show every staff on every page, even if blank.

Horns 2 and 4 should NOT be in bass clef unless they need it to avoid ledger lines. Do not use the bass clef throughout.

Thanks for the suggestions, however...

There is an argument going on in the conducting community in terms of C scores verses transposed scores. The conductor for this piece asked for the score in C as it is modal and not set in a specific key. I find that it really depends on the piece as to whether the score should be in C or transposed. I have a copy of both...

I also disagree with every staff on page. Again this is a taste issue. I've conducted scores of Beethoven where only the instruments playing where shown (as I have done) and others where every staff is visible. I personally much prefer to have a cleaner, more open score. If I could figure a way to produce the score with blank spaces where the staffs would be - like many modern scores by Ferneyhough or Crumb - (without drafting the score by hand) I would.

The horns 2 & 4 have extensive ledger lines in the score but not their parts. There are a few places where they don't need them, but I have always felt switching clefs was more a pain than just playing in a clef I am less familiar. HOWEVER, that said, this is a "Score in C". The actual horn parts are in treble clef. (Note, in the transposed score the horns are in treble clef.)

Thanks again,

Chip

Hi there...

I did not find anything seriously wrong about the score but similar, I did not find anything seriously interesting about this piece. While perhaps understanding the deeper meaning of the words, Shamatha, Vipashyana, Samadhi and Dhyanas would lead to better appreciation, the music wasn't inspiring enough to motivate me to find out more about them.

Sorry, honest feedback.

- While I like the score, I'm not overly enthused about it. It's a "nice" piece, but nothing to start submitting to orchestra for consideration.

IF it gets played somewhere other than this initial "reading" I'll be amazed.

- So, I guess I'd agree with you on that note.

Chip

hmmm....

interesting, but to say the truth I'm not really catched of it. The violins part is really strange. Sometimes totally out of the harmony the score requires. But go on!

Good luck!
