Symphony No. 1 in F-IV. Vivace e molto scherzando (SKETCH)

Featured Replies

It would be awesome to have piano darting in and out mimicking all that is happening. Very cool!

Welcome to Young Composers and thanks for posting. Is this excerpt all that you have done of your sketch or are you trying to promote your CD? What audio you do have is quite enjoyable, though.

Thanks for the comments! This is all I have done of the orchestral version of the sketch. The entire piece was conceived on two pianos, and now I'm in the process of orchestrating it. Very VERY tedious orchestration, let me tell you...:)

Nice, but the timpani writting stands out to me...A score would be nice to see what you have done...You need to leave room for retuning, and they can only play perhaps 4-5 note pitches in a phrase with out retuning...

Over all a great start...Scherzo is a tricky style. Quick modulation, upbeat jawnty, but also quite dark and sinister.....You did good! 7/10

Thanks for sharing this. A nicely written piece. It stays nice and busy, but not so much so that it becomes too fussy or irritating. It will be interesting to hear it when fully orchestrated.

Glad you shared this, you made me currious to the other movements, and the final version of this sketch.

It sounds well orchestrated to me. As I cannot check since there is no score tongue.gif I hope you would attach one so people could take a more in-depth look at your work. Your feedback will be more thorough, and It reminded me a little of Holst's Mercury. It has a similar scherzo-like moving opening.

Although yours sounds much more classical. Maybe its unfair to compare this to Holst. But I think it makes clear where is't possible to improve on

* As I hear it, you use a 6/8 (?) and divide it in 2 groups of 3. Holst changes to 3 times 2 quarters (like a tuplet) to make the rhythm even more interesting

* You use a very classical harmonic idiom. To move to the mediant is fine, but to me it felt a bit cliche.

Again: it is possible unfair to compare to a romanticist piece, if your idiom sounds more classical. So if the latter was your intention you succeeded. If not I hope to have given a helpful review smile.gif

Keep up!

Is there a score available?

Don't be discouraged about orchestration. It will become easier and eventually it will flow very naturally.
