Love is Gunna Save Us

I made this ballade as one of my amazing girlfriend's birthday presents. Took me a while to put this together, and it's great finally hearing it all put together! My only problems with the song are the brass parts and the guitar, but mostly because I feel they sound too fake. Looking forward to some input :)

How many girlfriends do you have?

Nice relaxing groove. I would have liked to hear more variation, but as something to chill to this works well. The mix itself seems a bit off, though, in that the bass really overpowers the treble.

Haha, you have to be joking >_> But anyways I had to turn up the bass, because at times it gets really soft when I like it the most (I'm a pianissimo piano player). In terms of variation, I'm horrible at coming up with chord progressions and melodies. Notice how I usually stick to Augmented Major and Minor 7th chords... and the occasional add 9 or leading chords. I guess I'm just not experienced enough; I am only just turning 18 this June. Any suggestions?

Do you have a fake book, like the Real Book? That's an excellent source of ideas for harmonic progressions. Of course the chords aren't harmonized for you and a good player will certainly use more interesting changes than what's written in a lot of pieces, but when you voice the chords yourself you'll slowly be able to hear different places that they can go. In relation to your composition, I think it's quite good up to 2:24 and then I personally start to lose interest. Maybe some slightly more active soloing would help? But if you're going for a chill piece I think you hit the nail on the head.
