Grad School Hunt

Featured Replies

To all the college students on YC (and future college students :D):

We all know how it is-the madness of finding a college-is it the right school, do you mesh with the faculty, is it actually worth studying at? I'm at the point I'm hunting again-this time for a graduate school. That being said, while I'm doing my research, anybody feel like shouting out their school and whether or not it's worth studying at? To get the ball rolling, I'll start with my current school

Clayton State University (CSU) isn't half bad for a Georgia Public Unviersity. Of all the GPUs, it's the cheapest. While students tend to go to CSU only to get their core out of the way and then transfer away, I've discovered (and knew before attending here) that our music department is a "hidden gem"-we literally take just about anybody, but still go through rigorous training.

That being said, we're a terribly small school. As of right now I'm our only B.M.Comp major-the majority of vocal performance or music Ed people. I've got company and others semi-serious in studying composition, but most of my time I've felt rather alone with my professor. It's perfect for those who like individual attention-but frustrating at the same time when looking for performers to collaborate with. I've performed the majority of my works until very recently. My other big problem is there's no Master's program here (hence why I'm looking)...

University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is fantastic. The faculty is really solid, and their program's very cool. On the higher end, there's University of Chicago and DePaul - I've worked with graduates and faculty at both, and they're very knowledgeable. For more commercial-type composition, look to USC (though they do have good people to train art music, too). The San Francisco Conservatory has a composition teacher for just about everything. SUNY Buffalo, weirdly enough, has a few fantastic people, including soprano/composer/conductor/doing-everything-person Tony Arnold.
