June 24, 201015 yr Hi there, I have just made a transcription of an album that does not already exist in print. I wish to sell the transcription on my website and wanted to know where I stand legally? Any advice would be great. Cheers
June 24, 201015 yr Well all albums, unless prior to 1923 (I believe), are protected under copyright and thus are illegal to be copied. That doesn't mean people don't, it just means you have the potential to be sued for it.
June 24, 201015 yr I don't think this is the right forum (YC) to ask for legal advice. You should consult a lawyer if you seriously want to find out.
June 24, 201015 yr I agree with SSC. Laws are complicated, especially when it comes to transcriptions and arrangements. If you're really going to be selling a product online that's not completely original, then you may want to consult a lawyer or talk to the performing rights organization or publisher associated with the original author. Plus what Tokke said has to do with U.S. copyright. I have no idea about laws in other countries.
