Flute Sonata, First Movement

Featured Replies

This is the first movement from my in-progress flute sonata, commissioned by a student. I tried to write highlighting the strengths of the instrument in this movement, giving it quick, crisp, and fleeting lines giving an airy playfulness to the melodies and instruments. Currently I am working on the second movement: a sultry tango to follow this one.As usual, comments, criticisms, and questions are welcome!

Flute Sonata, First Movement

Nice! I'm in love with the quirkiness of it all, the playful dissonances that give the piece so much character. I think your flute lines are very idiomatic, I definitely couldn't imagine the solo being written for any other instrument. I think that what contributes the most to the atmosphere are the exchanges between the flute and piano and the polyrhythms, they tend to give a kind of airy and irreverent impression to the music. I was expecting a longer piece, though - it seemed like you could have added a lot more material to your middle section - but it is very good as it is :phones: .

Inspired on Debussy's "The girl with the flaxen hair". I like how they answer each other. Is it in sonata form? I can recognize the variations on the first theme, but it was a little hard for me to spot the second theme.

Sounds great anyways. good job :)

one more thing, I think you could have a better ending. You could bring your first theme back and end it with that. Repetition ensures closure. It is such a good theme that it will tie it up together really good I believe.
