December 15, 201114 yr Hi guys, great forum, im looking to get better and better. my favourtie music is Radiohead (top of the list) Eric Satie, Aphex twin, Neil Young, The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Manic street Preachers, Micheal Nyman, Philip Glass, Max Richter, Bert Jansch, Nick Drake I just got a degree in Music Technology with Film Production in 2011, and I want to do a masters in music composition in 2012. I dont hear music, i use the trial and error, improvising, playing without thinking method, then record all ideas, and let them simmer. I have always had a problem with creating full / finsihed songs. They dont sound natural, and the sections sound forced and just a means to an end. I lack the knowledge. The only reason I want to do a masters in music composistion, is to satisfy the gap in my knowledge, because I crave being creative, but dont have the skills to finish a song. I am applying for classical music masters, becuase i think i will learn more in ths, musically, rather than applyng for pop music masters. but maybe i will be really out my depth becuase pop music is what i have listened to the most probbaly. I play guitar and piano, self taught, I can read music very slowly, i cant play an instrument from sheet music, just tabs . Many things i need to learn , but i am getting better everyday. I have moved to germany 6 months ago, and I am in a 5 piece guitar/drums/bass.singer band I love mimalism. maybe thats the direction i wanna go in. I also like to have specific music projects, or competition, for example something which will have limitations, which will therefore narrow down my options when composing, and hopefully finish a track!! Many Regards ANDREW BROWN b
December 15, 201114 yr Hey! Some of my music is post-minimalist, so I know how you feel in that regard. We all have bunches to learn! :D Thanks for joining the forum, see you around! -Morivou.
December 28, 201114 yr Welcome to the forum. I've got to be honest; you are unlikely to be accepted to study classical music at postgraduate level with the experience you have. Most undergrad programmes require Grade 8 on first instrument and Grade 5 keyboard if not first instrument, naturally this assumes that you have the ability to read music in all clefs and Grade 5 theory as well as a reasonable knowledge of music history and some basic composition skills. A Masters in composition would potentially involve writing music for at least a 10-piece classical ensemble and possibly an orchestra in pieces lasting 10-15 mins duration. They are aimed at students who already have some experience in composition and want to progress further. But fear not: there are plenty of pop/jazz/electronic and film music courses out there that you will find can teach you all the skills for your area of interest. You seem to know your way round a studio which will stand you well. I would try to get some stuff finished though if you want to have some work to show on application.
