Trumpet Concerto

Recommended Posts

I am in a bit of a pickle. I have a big recital of my music coming up and I need to have this unfinished trumpet concerto on the program. I need to finish this movement and one other (the second movement is already done) if I am to have any prayer of getting an orchestra. I want the music in this movement to return back to how it was in the beginning then go back into another B section with a more mysterioso vibe then come back to the fast quick stuff to end it. The only problem is, I don't know how to move on from what I have. Any suggestions would be great!

Hey!  Welcome to the website.  Great music that you've posted here - very intense and driving trumpet concerto.  Judging by your name, is one of your biggest compositional influences the concert band piece "Vesuvius" by Frank Ticheli?  It seems similar in style and harmony to this concerto.  But also I'd say your writing is similar to some Alan Silvestri, a film composer who's written for the MCU and famously, the music to the "Back to the Future" trilogy.  I don't know if it's helpful or inspirational for you to go and have a listen to some of those other pieces in a similar style - just an idea.  I really like your concerto - it seems like it reaches a climax at the point at which you're stuck on.  If it were mine I'd be wary of trying to compose the whole movement at the same high intensity level since that could fatigue the listener if it's kept up for too long.  Maybe now would be the time to create a respite/contrast?  Great job so far though and thanks for sharing!  I hope some of that is at least helpful.

Actually I think you're asking the wrong question. It's not "What goes after bar 66?" but rather "What goes between (roughly) bar 36 and bar 41?" That's where you need a second subject, development, etc. etc. You've got a perfectly good ending for a first movement at bar 66; what you need is the middle.
