The Feather Lamp Symphony for Piano & Violin

Featured Replies

Over the past year, many people have commented that my Piano and Violin Concerto No. 1 wasn't really a concerto. I guess that was a polite way of telling myself that I'm a mediocre pianist since the purpose of a concerto is to show the virtuosity of a great pianist. Well, I'm aware that my play is below average and my old broken hands provided everything they could. My only consolation is that Ravel could not play his piano music decently either, knowing of course that I am so far from the genius of this great composer. In order to satisfy the classical music purists, I renamed this music “The Feather Lamp Symphony for Piano & Violin”. Nevertheless, it remains to this day my most popular composition that I have done in the past two years. Unfortunately, I still haven't reached 500 Likes. If you haven't listened to it yet, I invite you to listen to it and if you like what you hear, you would do me a favor if you let me know by pressing the like button.

Thank you so much Tatiana for this inspiring performance.

Congratulations on getting at least part of this somewhat substantial work performed!  The violin performance is quite expressive and idiomatic.  Having said that I am not entirely sure that the term "concerto" is right for this piece.  A concerto is usually at least somewhat showy, displaying the virtuosic capabilities of the instrument and the player to the amazement of the audience.  There is also no themes in this piece.  It sounds more like a cinematic soundtrack featuring piano and violin being mostly focused on creating interest and intrigue through chord progressions which would make this a great piece of music to have as the background to some kind of movie scene(s).  The production quality is outstanding however and kudos on finding a human being who would perform part of the piece for you - I know how hard it is to find realistic sounding solo strings Vst's.  Thanks for sharing!

Peter,

You are absolutely right. This concerto is more of a piano & violin piece accompanied by an orchestra. However, since I am a bad pianist I thought that a concerto for average pianist could be useful to show-off with minimal piano capabilities. Nevertheless, I also agree that it probably sounds more like a soundtrack while missing a theme as I focused more on the texture and mood. Thank you for the comment as I indeed need to work on that. On those aspect I believe that the next short piano music accompanied by the orchestra is better. Isn't it?

Cheers,

Syrel

Hello Syrel! I unfortunately agree with PeterthePapercomPoser on this one. I can’t help but hear it as a cinematic background piece (not that there’s anything wrong with that), having not really any violin or piano solos, and just movement around with chord progressions. The chord progressions, I admit have some dark charm to them that I’m a sucker for, so I do like it’s overall sound, but I also feel that that is all it mostly is.

On the flip side, though, good job on creating 8 minutes of music with orchestra! It’s a difficult task for anyone to achieve. And yes, the production value IS quite AMAZING!

It certainly isn’t a bad piece of music, but I think it has potential to be more than what it is now (if, of course, there is intention for it to be more). Nonetheless, great job!
