Introduction and Allegro for Piano - please comment.

Featured Replies

This is a composition that I wrote most of many years ago for a friend and am now just getting around to completing it.

I'd be grateful for any comments.

Thanks.

I felt like the introduction in this piece was way too long in comparison to the main material which I perceived as being of much higher quality than the intro.  The introduction is almost like a baroque style prelude but with much choppier harmonic changes.  It almost sounds like you just resolved to harmonic noodling for the first 6 minutes.

The last 2 minutes actually have some material of substance and are much more interesting and melodic imo.  But the Allegro should really be a bit longer to balance the piece out (or you could shorten the much too long intro).  You have some cool irregular phrasing and more interesting sequences and dissonant melodic and harmonic ideas in the Allegro.  The ending seemed a bit sudden though.

That's my impression of your piece.  I enjoyed the Allegro a lot more of course but don't let that dissuade you.  Thanks for sharing and keep composing!

Hi there. Thanks for the comments.  I agree about the balance in the lengths of the two movements. Overall I wanted a stark contrast between the styles of the two movements with the Intro being more tonal and minimalist and the Allegro more aggressive and modernist. I'll have a look at editing down the intro, I think and probably make the Allegro end less suddenly with a coda maybe based on the middle section of the Allegro. Thanks again. It's great to get feedback.
