the first movement of my symphony

Featured Replies

I tried to compose a big symphonic work for the first time

This is quite a fanfare-like and march-like movement!  With very triumphant explosions of emotion but also with some foreboding phrygian parts.  About the score:

image.png This is very confusing.  The Horns are clearly in F, not in D (and the key of the piece is Db not D).  These Horns are also valved horns.  Valved horns can play in any key and so don't need different crooks to attach to their instrument which would re-tune the instrument into the key of the piece they're playing.  There are usually different crooks of different lengths that make the Horns higher or lower depending on the key they need to be in.  But valved Horns are always in F (although they have a Bb horn trigger for the upper registers of their range which the Bb horn sounds better and more in-tune on).  In the modern day and times there's virtually no reason to display the horns in any other key since the valved horns can play the whole chromatic scale quite easily.

The end of the movement is quite conclusive and triumphant!  Great job and thanks for sharing!

Hi @uri_lipp,

I like the opening when you successfully build up the tension. But after it I start feeling the score difficult to follow. Would you analyze the form of your movement to us?

You can definitely add more details to the score, most importantly the dynamic markings. To create climax I think you can have moments where all the instruments are orchestrated together, since this only happen at the end! Now the loud sections are always provided by the brass and I think you can mix it up more! Also the music is in Db major for almost its entirety and you may modulate to different keys for contrast!

Thx for sharing!

Henry
