Putting a ritardando in Finale

Featured Replies

I've looked everywhere and I can't seem to figure out how to put a ritardando in Finale that will affect playback. Does anyone know where it is or how to do it?

click on the tool that says 'mf' on it, scroll down to 'rit.'

and use Human Playback (the little > button that looks like a tape deck button).

if you just spacebar+mouse click to play back none of those indications will give any effect.

It is a little too complicated to write down the steps here, but rest assured you can do it. It has to do with going under PLayback Options > Type > Tempo and then choosing an Executable shape ofr a slow, medium or fast ritard. I know this is unclear.

I would recommend purchasing the book Finale Power by Mark Johnson or maybe a more updated version. It has been an invaluable reference for in using Finale and has helped get me through scoring a a full musical amongst many other diverse applications like using tablature, Codas, and percussion maps. =O)

Supposedly you can also just use the JW Tempo Plug-in on the companion CD-Rom of Finale 2003 (maybe later versions too).

you don't need all that complicated stuff.

just put in an expression for rit.

it doesn't even need to be defined.

humanplayback will play it.

especially if you have a destination tempo indicated at the end.

when HP doesn't rit. enough for my taste, I like to place an invisible tempo indication at my target. it helps HP rit. more.
