I don't think anyone really doubts that Mozart, at his best, was a brilliant composer. It just really annoys me when people worship him as some sort of God and act like he was incapable of writing bad music. I can guarantee that you could take a piece by some absolute no-mark composer from the same period and say it was written by Mozart and some of these people would instantly proclaim it to be a work of genius. You could probably do the same in reverse and claim a Mozart piece was written by, let's say, Fernando Sor. I bet some people would then automatically judge it as an inferior piece, regardless of the actual musical content. And anyway, as Jaap has already said, it's all subjective anyway so what's the point in even arguing about it?

Well, we would have to enter in a large description of "successful" but since I live in a place nothing proper for this dedication, and I haven't had any premiere of what I've wrote, I think I can't be very close of that word "successful"... my ambitions ? man to be truly honest, I must say I've changed my ambitions dramatically in the last few years, right now my "ambitions" is nothing but have a job, a house, a wife, and that's it, I can live really happy with those things, without those things, I could have a quite large/loud premiere and I wouldn't remove the deep sadness I carry in my soul, not a slightly bit. I'll have a premiere in a few days, but is an arrangement, on Christmas songs.... not very exiting isn't it ? now that if I am satisfied with what I write ? yes generally I am.

Since there is a large ammount of composers or wanna-be composers I am wondering how really you want to make a resounding impact as a composer throughout 21st Century. I personally am considered as an established composer in my Slovenia. Maybe sounds bold, but I believe I might be in top 10 at the moment. Still, I am interested to have a bigger international success. I am lucky to enjoy some of it, especially with my chamber opus for wind instruments - my compositions such as Yearning for flute quartet, Trio for flute, clarinet and bassoon, The Bird Tango for piccolos and piano have had a solid reputation abroad. In my country, I am experiencing a new commission boom - I'll be busy throught 2013. A new composition for choir, a new composition for wind quintet, three new short pieces for different winds with piano, a new composition for flute and cello... Please don't consider me a loudmouth or over self-esteemed. :) I am just telling the facts about my current composing career. Still, most of compositions are actually written without getting paid, but that's mostly OK, as long as performers do not expect me to pay them for their performances of my music. :) My ambitions for the future: to compose the largest number of symphonies in Slovenia. The record is, of course, a magic number of nine, created by Blaz Arnic. Still, I only have two and a half completed so far... :) And my ambition is also to have as many fans of my music as it is actually possible, since I am not a young pop music upstart (like Justin Bieber) and I am actually an "invisible" composer of so much hated modern classical music... My personal goals are to write quality works and to care as little as possible about "records", "top ten lists" (lol), etc. Oh, and I strive to avoid self-designating myself as a "real-life professional composer" every time I open my mouth.

I'd like to mention that we've had problems before when sending nominations without including link to the nominated piece/thread, and then we have to bee looking all over the site for something wasn't even named like that, so please include links to all nominated works and threads.

Love to see how "Best-composers..." kind of questions always derail in something like this. Taste is a subjective matter, which attracts fundamentalist beleivers in their idol to claim their favourite is absolutely the best (whether it be Papa-Haydn, Mozart or Mahler (who I all hate)), and it also attracts trolls (and law appearantly) to make fun of that (and rightly so). And then we have poor robert, caught in between. My solution is: never ask these kind of "best composer" questions again, never ever.

I agree with a lot of what Whitcre said in that article. I think its important to enter competitions, even if you have no intentions on winning. Some one has to listen to your music to determine if you will win or not. And even if you dont win a judge that liked your piece could contact you for a commission or remember you when you are applying for that composition professor job. I also like competitions as its a motivator to get music performed. Often times, composers only get music performed on their universities one composition studio concert or their recital. So competitions, and even conferences and conventions, are another arena for performances. I personally have entered more competitions that I can remember and have won one of them. And Im not going to lie, I liked winning. Even though I know music composition competitions are so subjective that winning is like saying your the best at thinking, but its nice to know that your hard work is recognized by people outside of your bubble. And the prize money I won was nice too.
